Inivisibility cloaks! Yesss!!! —- I mean… wait. Nobody else is going to use them besides me, right?

Ah. So, let me tell you about Evan Dahm’s Rice Boy. I’d read it before, but online and in snippets. It was lovely, but at APE I bought the collection, and I can tell you that reading the entire thing as a full story in one sitting was marvelous. Magical and whimsical and bizarre and lovely. How many years until a Vattu collection?

What convention to hit next. Shall I go backwards? Let’s see, the convention previous to APE was MICE out in Boston. It was a sweet little con, and it was nice to see Colleen A F Venable and KC Green. Um. Yeah. That was an easy con-report if I ever done writ one before. :)

09/07/11 The Worser of Two Evils

So, I have conventions in DC area (Bethesda, MD and Rockville, MD) the next two weekends. And if you’re wondering which one you should go to, let me give you a quick run-down of my impressions of what they’ll be.

This weekend is Small Press Expo (or SPX) in Bethesda, MD. September 10 & 11, 11:00-7 and 12:00-6 respectively. This is kinda’ an artist DIY self-publishing kind-of-thing. Focus is on books rather than merchandise. The set-up is a bunch of tables with artists behind them, and panels on topics of interest. There will be LOTS of webcartoonist, each behind the table selling their own wares. Entry is $10/day, or $15 both days.

The next weekend is InterventionCon in Rockville, MD, September 16-18, from Friday 12-Sunday 4:00. This is an internet-artist-focused experience with leaning toward Sci-Fi and Anime. When they say Friday-until-Sunday they MEAN it, there will be music, panels, board games, workshops, and probably parties in the motel throughout the night. There will probably be many costumes. Price per day is $15-$25, or $45 for the weekend.

At InterventionCon I’ll be on a couple panels:

Friday at 8:00 “Getting Paid To Do What You Already Love: Working With Companies” along with David Reddick & Tony DiGerolamo.
Saturday at 3:00 “Back in my day: The webcomic veterans panel” along with Shaenon Garrity, Jennie Breeden & Bill Holbrook.

And that’s it. Still crazy busy getting ready for a month of travel. Leave early-early Wednesday morning!

SPX Small Press Expo!
Come on by and say hello.

For me, it’s been insane here getting ready for this month long trip (East coast and San Fran conventions). The strip is drawn on large paper and hard to transport (let alone the scanner) so I can’t bring much with me except for computer work (which is mostly just coloring), but I think I’m going to manage it with zero interruptions of the strip. yay!

07/12/11 Awaiting The Ferry

For about 5 years I’ve been writing and drawing for MAD Magazine, mostly a tale of two idiots I titled, “It Only Hurts When I Laugh.” And not only is it humbling to work for such an established magazine I’ve enjoyed since my childhood, but they’ve also been really good to me and a fun bunch to work with.

You can continue to find “It Only Hurts When I Laugh” frequently in the magazine itself, as I am still producing them. but MAD is now also running them (not sure at what schedule) on their website. So, they’ve posted the first one I did for them back in 2006, and YOU CAN READ IT NOW.

The Purfin M-32 tee-shirts arrived, and they look great. For those who ordered them, I’ll have those in the mail before the weekend. :)

And in awesome news, Beth made peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. Awesome news for me.

A good weekend of enjoying beautiful weather. Beth and I canoed around Boston Harbor (in Olympia, WA, not in Massachusetts). And I just saw a small production of “Pirates of Penzance” at the Greenlake Bathhouse, put on by a middle-school aged cast, which was delightful.

A few thanks for Spacetrawler shout-outs… Don Ahe of the awesome webcomic “Road Apples Almanac” wrote a blurb about Spacetrawler about a year ago HERE, Lys wrote a blurb about Spacetrawler about a half a year ago HERE, and Mark Grealish wrote a blurb about Spacetrawler about a year ago HERE. On a related topic, let me know if you write a review of Spacetrawler anywhere, I’m (usually) happy to link to it, but often am never (or very belatedly) even aware of it.

In other “news,” I just finished reading Zach Weiner’s first collection of strips “Save Yourself, Mammal!” from his comic strip SMBC. Awesome work, Zach! Check it out. (You may remember I did some art fill-in for the comic “Snowflakes” he writes for.)

Also, Scott Kurtz of PVP along with Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins of Penny Arcade, creators of two of the largest online webcomics, are co-creating a new comic called Tales From The Trenches. I’ll be curious to see how that goes. :)
