Hey, is there any business/marketing people out there who have any desire to take over the marketing/networking side of my business? Today is one of those days when I feel like I am skilled at comics, and the rest… not so much.

Sigh. Anyhow. Breathe, wryly smile that today’s strip feels all-too apropos, and move forward.

So, I am no longer attending the Boston and NYC Wizard comic cons. I JUST found out that the dates were changed, and wasn’t told.

I’ve already bought the plane ticket out east…. which means I’m looking for replacements. I looks like I might attend MICE in Cambridge, MA on September 24th. And I’m looking at options for the weekend of Sep 17-18, so if anyone has ANY ideas or contacts or anything for conventions, fests, etc, I am open to hearing.

In the “me-writing” universe, hey! I’m looking for a episode-to-episode synopsis of Brazilian soaps (for writing research as far as how they handle character plotting). “Amor e Intrigas” is the specific one I’ve been looking for. Any of you have any ideas? :)

So, I have a portable word processor, and on the plane ride to Minneapolis I was in the groove and outlined the rest of the year’s scenes/situations including writing a few pivotal strips. I also wrote extensive notes on two other projects I’m working on. So, this word processor is awesome in that it’s light, portable, and the batteries last about 20 hours. It DOES use a palm-pilot virtual memory, so if the batteries die, ALL data is lost. But in the past, when not using it, it would keep some minimal charge for MONTHS. (Do you see where this is going yet?) Exactly. All gone. And I haven’t thought about the ideas at all since I wrote them down because I’ve been super-busy and because I wrote them down.

Sigh.

Trying REALLY hard to remember, and I know I had some really good brand spankin’ new ideas, but so far the memory well of what I wrote has been totally dry.

Ooohhhh, so frustrating. And I’m usually such a good backupper. I’m also really good at saying “water under the bridge,” but this one is REALLY difficult.

Just so’s you know, I did a guest strip for R*K*Milholland’s awesome “Something Positive,” it was so much fun playing with his characters. So, check that out.

And congratulations to Pete Abrams of “Sluggy Freelance” for wrapping up a 10 year story arc. F*%cking hell. I met Peter at San Diego Comic Con back in 2001 or so, which was a real pleasure. And then I saw him again a couple years ago at Emerald City Comic Con… and when I did, realized I had fallen out of habit of reading Sluggy (as happens), and so I started back up. It was a little hard to follow, as the story was sprinting to the finish line, but I… um… slugged my way through it. And it was fun,  and REALLY impressive, but I’m also looking forward to starting new with the next story! Sweet!

Still recovering after CONvergence this weekend. Phew! It was a roller-coaster of an experience. And I managed to cover costs, which was a relief.

Yeah, I’m learnign all about SciFi/Fantasy conventions. Minneapolis was an overwhelming and fun and lovely experience. The smallish one I attended in Phoenix didn’t have the numbers to earn enough to cover expenses, but it was about the literature and the love for it. And it was small enough that I was able to meet four excellent writers who were delightful to spend time with and who I’ve enjoyed both their work and keeping in contact with.

I’ve mentioned Gini Koch of the “Touched by An Alien” SciFi comedy series of books. Then Seanan McGuire (aka Mira Grant) of the amazing “Feed” zombie series (and the “October Daye” series, and collector of dolls and My Little Pony).

I also met Ashley Barnard who wrote “Shadow Fox” which I recently finished — which was a lovely romance romp, and reminded me of all my escapist fantasies as a young teen. And the sharp Marsheila “not Marsha” Rockwell, who wrote “Legacy of Wolves,” which was a engrossing fantasy detective story (I especially liked Greddark, the Sherlock-Holmes-meets-James-Bond dwarf).

So, yeah. just getting back into the groove. Worked today. Spent time with Beth. We walked around, slid the long slide at the Phinney Community Center playground, gazed at the mountains. Good times.

Happy 4th of July. Drive safe.

Convergence was a sight to behold. An around the clock party for the geek set taking over the entirety of a two tower motel. Days spent in the “Dealers Room” talking with fans — ones who have been reading my work since “Bruno“, to people who’d never heard of me. Evening’s spent wandering halls where every doorway led to a different geek-themed party. All with frequent trips to the PB&J room. The costumes and craziness was overwhelming, but it was mostly the utter acceptance and good will which impressed me. I never set foot in any place the entire convention where ANYONE looked at me funny like “what the hell are you doing here,” more often than not they’d hand me something blue to drink.

Thanks to Betsy, Mike, Doug, Ellie, Bruce, Julie, Mya, Dave, Brickston, Felix, Regina, Connie (heh), Amanda, Carlos, Gwen, Don, Molly, Nick, Chris Nitz, Megan, Richard & Suanna, Ski, Denise, Kate, Lisa, Ben, Oz, Jeanie, Bonnie, Gordon Smuder, Brian Keene, the good folk at the Splounge, Con Suites, and everyone else who helped me in making this such a fun weekend. And special thanks to Hedgie, who connected all the dots.

Of course, I missed my lovely Beth and the cats. Ah, the duality of traveling away from home.

I didn’t do a lot of standalone sketches at this convention, mostly sketches in books. But for some reason of the giveaway sketches I DID, I had Dimitri on my mind, possibly because of the massive amount of booze which seemed to be consumed by (most) all of the attendees in the evenings. The girl sketch at the bottom, I’m not sure who she is, just a sketch I guess, steampunk maybe?

I had a lovely weekend at Wizard Philly Convention. Tabled right next to Travis Nichols and Colleen AF Venable, who were delightful company (and did the all-important table-watching when I would run to the loo). I also got to chat for a bit with Brad Guigar of Evil Inc who was sitting nearby (hi, Brad!).

Let’s see… Thanks to Doc Nickel over at The Tinker’s Guild for the kind link. And in comic related news, they’re making Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” into a TV series. Might be okay. That’s kind of interesting.

it was Father’s Day yesterday, and Jon Rosenberg (Goats, SFAM) has some new products at his TopatoCo store as well as some discounted shirts. You should support him because he has TWO new babies — TWINS, and also because he does awesome work, and, well… because you can get reduced shipping by buying some of my stuff as well. Ha!

Lastly, I have had a question for you all.

This morning I ran a poll, and I just closed it, as I think it’s enough data to get a sense. So…. I’ll be reducing the cafepress posters down to $10. It’ll be a bit of work, so it might be a week or so before I get to it. I’ll keep you posted.

The reason? Ever since I have posted the Posters/GicleePrints for sale, none have sold. People have asked for full-color posters in the past, and so I know there is a demand — and my guess is that I priced them incorrectly.

The Giclee prints I don’t think I can lower any. They’re a bit more expensive because I have to print them individually (which raises the printing cost), then have to go and pick them up myself, sign them, and then ship them. But they are archive quality specialty items. If you want a really nice signed full-color print, they’re your bag. If they don’t sell, I am okay with that. I might do a less expensive unsigned version that the printer would ship, but I’ll hold off on coding that for now.

I had asked: What would you expect to pay for an 11x17 full-color poster of a Spacetrawler page (this price does NOT include the cafepress shipping)?

As you can see in the banner below the strip, this weekend I’ll be tabling at the Philadelphia Comic Con, Friday-Sunday the 17th-19th. Come by and say hello! The hours are:

Friday noon-8
Saturday 10-7
Sunday 10-5

And by-the-way, for anyone who wants to come to the convention simply to say “hi” or have me sign books you’ve already bought, you are welcome to. For those who WISH you could come by to purchase a book bu cannot, thank god for TopatoCo!

This blog is a bit brief because I’m madly getting ready to go to Philadelphia. In fact, I’ll be there before this even goes live. If anything interesting happens on the plane (ooh, maybe they’ll give me double salted peanut rations) I’ll try to blog it when I get there. If not, rest assured it was likely a dull flight in which I finally get to finish the book I’ve been reading this past month.

Hey, I’m in Philly with twenty minutes to kill before the strip goes up. The flight was actually quite pleasant (despite getting NO peanuts). I was very lucky to get a non-stop on this leg, so it was only 5 hours. The screaming children directly behind me were screaming in Italian, which took the edge off somehow. And I had the most lovely conversation most of the way with a statistics professor who writes SF recreationally, and then I played Uno with her and her friend. Bonus!

And now I’m here, and it’s so lovely to seem my brother and sister-in-law and nephew. It’s going to be a good week.
